In December 1996, Alan Greenspan warned of “irrational exuberance” in the stock market. He was right. He was also three years early.
The euphoria that followed ran from late 1997 to March 2000. Companies with no earnings and no business model were valued in the billions. A friend of mine quit his job to day-trade. Another told me his brother-in-law had turned $40,000 into $400,000 in eighteen months.
I was watching it happen, and I was preparing for what I believed was coming. In 1999, while the Dow rose about 44%, my client accounts were up just 4%. That was a hard year. Clients called, frustrated. But in 2000 and 2001, while the market cratered two years in a row, my clients made money.
I believe we are living through something similar right now. I’m walking through what I’m doing differently this time in a free workshop.
